Asymmetry, Speed, and New Strategies Incoming
One of 2024’s biggest games is about to get a bold new upgrade. Czech Games Edition has officially announced SETI: Space Agencies, the first expansion for SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, and it looks like a major evolution of an already standout title.

This expansion introduces asymmetric player powers in the form of distinct scientific institutions — from private tech companies to global research networks — each with its own abilities, advantages, and unique starting conditions. These new organizations promise to shake up your strategy from the very first turn and bring fresh long-term planning opportunities to every session.
Fans of Terraforming Mars will likely see a familiar design choice here. Much like that game’s Prelude expansion, SETI: Space Agencies includes “Quick Start” cards that help players skip the slower early rounds and jump right into the action — especially helpful at lower player counts. It’s a smart move that addresses one of the common criticisms of the base game and gets you to those satisfying mid-to-late-game combos much faster.
In addition to asymmetric factions and a speedier opening, the expansion also includes:
- Three new alien species with unique gameplay twists
- 40+ new project cards inspired by real-world tech and initiatives
- Signal tokens, a new mechanic that subtly boosts scanning efficiency
All of this is layered into the core SETI experience without overwhelming it — just deeper options, quicker starts, and more replay value.
For players who already love the exploration, telescope scanning, and scientific development of SETI, this expansion looks like a natural next step. And for those on the fence due to the game’s slower start or more symmetric setup, Space Agencies might be exactly what you were waiting for.
What do you think about the upcoming Space Agencies expansion? Does the added asymmetry and faster start sound like the boost SETI needed? Drop your thoughts in the comments — we’d love to hear if you’ll be launching this expansion to your table!
