Change My Mind Review: The Party Game That Sparks Laugh-Out-Loud Debates

Change My Mind is a party game for anyone who loves making tier lists, arguing over “best and worst” rankings, and defending completely ridiculous opinions. Whether it’s ranking breakfast cereals, Marvel movies, or “silver foxes,” this game turns casual debates into hilarious showdowns. In Change My Mind, your goal is to convince friends that your ranking is the right one — no matter how absurd the topic. There are three standalone editions — the base game, Chaos Unleashed, and For the Family — which can be played separately or combined for even bigger, wilder sessions. Expect passionate (and completely unnecessary) arguments, like why Oops!…I Did It Again is clearly superior to Toxic — how could anyone think otherwise?

Player Count, Playtime, and Objective

The base game of Change My Mind plays 3–8 players, while the standalone editions (Chaos Unleashed and For the Family) play 3–5 players. The box lists a playtime of 30–90 minutes, which feels spot-on — especially since, as the rulebook wisely says, “When you start to debate amongst yourselves and forget about The Ranker, you’ve hit nirvana.” You can adjust the length of your game by deciding how many cards a player needs to win.

The objective is simple: win the most cards by matching The Ranker’s list more closely than everyone else.

Here’s how it works: one player is The Ranker each round and draws a card from the deck. Each card has a topic and five related items. The Ranker decides whether to sort them best-to-worst, worst-to-best, or in any order that makes sense to them (more on that later). Everyone else secretly places their ranking chips in the order they think The Ranker will choose.

Once ready, The Ranker reveals their initial list and explains their reasoning. Then the real fun begins — the table debates, cajoles, and pleads with The Ranker to swap items around. When The Ranker locks in their final list, everyone reveals their guesses. The player whose ranking matches The Ranker’s the most wins that card. The game ends when someone reaches the agreed number of cards — 3, 5, or however long you want to keep the laughs going.

What Makes It Stand Out

In the age of Cards Against Humanity and the countless knock-offs lining Target shelves, this game takes a different approach. Instead of relying on shock value that fades after a few plays, the real fun here comes from the discussion, the people, and the challenge of figuring out how someone else will rank things. The conversations and debates are where the game shines, creating memorable moments that don’t wear out as quickly as one-liner joke cards.

Even with the NSFW deck, the humor doesn’t become stale because the focus isn’t just on the punchline — you’re still ranking, guessing, and persuading. The variety of standalone editions also makes it easy to test the waters with your group. You can start small, see if it clicks, and then expand into the other versions if everyone enjoys it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Engaging social interaction — the fun comes from debates and discussion, not just the cards themselves.
  • Replayable — every group and every topic leads to new conversations, keeping it fresh.
  • Standalone editions available — easy entry points without needing to commit to a big box.
  • Flexible tone — can be lighthearted or spicier depending on whether you use the NSFW cards.
  • Accessible rules — quick to teach and get playing right away.

Cons

  • Group dependent — less fun if your group isn’t into discussion or playful debate.
  • NSFW content may not be for everyone — limits where and with whom you can play. You should pick up the For the Family edition if this is going to be an issue

Final Thoughts

Some of my favorite change my mind cards

Change My Mind shines when played with the right group. It isn’t about mastering clever mechanics or deep strategy; it’s about sparking conversation, laughter, and maybe a little playful chaos. Unlike games that rely on one-liner jokes that fade quickly, this one stays lively because the fun is in how your group debates and ranks the topics. If your game nights thrive on personality-driven interaction, this is a fantastic pick. Just keep in mind that it may fall flat with quieter groups or those who prefer structured gameplay.
